Happy happy holidays!

happy happy

Although I've been mighty sucky at keeping this blog up to date, I wanted to wish everyone who actually still reads it a very happy holiday. We just got a bunch of snow dumped on us, so it certainly feels festive around here! :) But now, the rain comes... lame.

Seriously, though. I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday and a great 2009 filled with peace and new adventures.

A poor me post

Well, I'm home sick today. Lame! My nose is filled up, but continues to run (yeah, I know... far more information than you wanted), I can't hear a damn thing, I have no appetite and every time I cough, my lungs burn... and continue to burn for a while afterwards. Ugh.

Regardless of all this, this past weekend we had a nice get together of friends, in early celebration of my 31st. We had a nice pot luck and then played a bunch of games. It was nice. I had slept for 3 hours in the afternoon just to get ready for it. Yesterday I felt better, but still slept in the aft. I hate feeling like this. Completely useless.

So in addition to feeling like crap, I've been having a hard time trying to get into the festive spirit. I'm really not in the mood. Even the dump of snow we got on Saturday and Sunday has done nothing to make me feel festive. :( I just don't care about getting gifts for people. I really don't. Go out and buy your own presents. Maybe writing holiday cards today will help.

We decided to do an exchange with my dad and stepmom this year, so that lessens the stress a bit. But we're filling stockings, so we need to be creative! I've already got a few things for my stepmom, so at least I've started. But now the nieces! And the grandmas (who never want anything anyway..)! I just find it a little too much this year, and I don't know why. I know I'll end up doing all my shopping on one day, and that's fine with me. It'll probably be the weekend before Christmas too... a real treat for me and the billion other shoppers out there.

But all in all, I am looking forward to spending some time with family and friends. Actually, I forgot to mention that my good friend L (who is currently in England) is moving back to Ontario, so that's nice! She'll only be about 3 hours from where I live. I'm looking very forward to having her near, again.

And I am looking very forward to seeing Metric (or to hear their latest tune...)this weekend. I haven't seen any live music in a while, so that'll be fabulous. PLUS, we got a great deal and are staying at the Sheraton Centre for under $100! We're going to make an evening out of it! I think we'll do a little shopping downtown as well, and kill two birds with one stone. I just hope I feel better for the concert!

Funny thing... this post has made me feel better. Strange how writing how crappy I feel can actually make me feel good. I think I might reward myself by watching a DLed Queer as Folk episode.. yay me!

motivated

water dropSpent the past few days at a conference that has given me a lot of food for thought. Lots of sessions on the state of our planet and what we need to do to help it bounce back. My god it was depressing. Stephen Lewis spoke, Elizabeth May spoke, Bob MacDonald spoke. Jean Lemire spoke. The three days were stacked with speakers and it was amazing. Depressing, but amazing and powerful. I cried many times.

I came home last night feeling both keyed in and tired. There were many sessions that spoke right to me, and now what I need to do is keep the passion and momentum I have felt over the past three days. I am rethinking my place on this planet and how I'm using (abusing?) my place. I have always had a conservation mind and I have always been on the green side of things. But I can, and we all can, do more. Sure they're little things, but I can still do them.

Here's what I'd like to do to be a better global citizen:
  1. Try harder to keep the thermostat below 20ºC. We already put it to at or below 15ºC when we're out of the house or sleeping, but further reducing our home temperature will minimize our fuel use (20 years of relatively cheap oil left... that's all) and reduce the amount of CO2 we release into the air.
  2. Install water limiter in the shower to be able to stop the flow of water at the shower head. It allows you to easily stop the water flow while you lather up. We tried to install one when we first moved in, but it was crap. I'd like to try the same one again, but maybe make sure it's properly installed this time...
  3. Donate to the Stephen Lewis Foundation or another similarly worthy cause. As Stephen Lewis said, in many cases human rights issues are also environmental issues and vice versa. In particular in the Congo where the women of the community are targeted because women keep the community together. Soldiers in the civil war rape and beat women to get them away from the community's resources. It's heart wrenching.
  4. Limit the amount of plastic I end up with. Plastic containers are handy for storing things, but there are other ways. I already turn down bags as often as I can at stores, but bringing my cloth bag(s) everywhere is a good move. I can also limit what plastic I buy at the grocery store (juice containers, etc). I would love to be able to buy yoghurt in bulk
  5. I will not consciously support the bottled water industry. No way, no how. I have had this focus for a while, but I will continue with it. We have a filter on the kitchen tap and that's good enough for me. I will not support the unnecessary purchase of a product that I can get for free... and that doesn't have nearly the regulation.
  6. I will consciously continue to limit my support of multinationals such as Walmart.
  7. Further reduce my consumption of meat - for ethical, health and water conservation reasons:
  • to produce 1kg soybeans, 1650 - 2200 litres of water
  • to produce 1kg beef, 50,000-100,000 litres
Many of my goals revolve around water because water is going to be so key in the next 50 years. 10 years even! Canadians have a false sense of security surrounding water (me included) and we need to smarten up and start conserving now. Sure all the figures thrown around say that Canada has a bunch of water, and while that may theoretically be true, much of that water is locked up in glaciers or inaccessible under ground or polluted. We actually have very little water.

My concern is that I was at a conference of 800 people and these people are already on side. What about the general Canadian public? What about those who claim that if they can afford the gas in their truck that they should damn well be able to drive it anywhere and any time they want? What about those who deny global warming and their need to do anything about it? What about those F'ing people who use their hose to clean their driveways?!?! It honestly makes me feel ill that there are people who are so ignorant of the facts. It's disturbing.

I know I'm standing on my soapbox and possibly sounding very arrogant right now, but the issues facing us right now are so immediate and need to be addressed by us as citizens and our governments. Sure the changes we can make in our daily lives are little in the grand scheme of things, but for my own piece of mind I need to make these changes.

"We do not inherit the earth from our parents, but borrow it from our children and grandchildren".

awkward

I'm not sure why, but I'm feeling awkward about the Facebook 'friend request' I just received. It's from my high school boyfriend. It's not like I have any hidden feelings (jesus... that was 12 years ago!!), but I felt this weird pang when I saw his pic. Maybe cuz he was my first.

Oh Facebook... making the world a better place...

Addendum: Oh my... he now has three kids. Isn't that weird when someone at the same point in life has a completely different life? Huh. Another interesting reminder: His spelling is BRUTAL! It's just as bad as I remember it.

It's so interesting going down memory lane. Kind of a queasy lane, though.

I feel dirty

I just got in from having wings with a friend. It was a nice evening and now my stomach feels kind of gross. But that's not why I feel dirty.

I feel dirty because at the back of the place we were having our wings, there was a little rally going on. Cheering. Posters. All sorts of fun stuff. While that may be all well and good, this rally was for someone I'm not particularly fond of.

The rally was for our local Conservative MP.

Puke.

He should just go away. I'm not sure I want to frequent this restaurant anymore. Not if they allow such a stupid dick in the door...

I'm a wino... no, not really

wino
Well, we had a great time cycling around Niagara, sampling wine upon wine upon whine...ahem, I mean wine. It was a lot of fun.

Friday night we arrived at our B&B a bit later than we expected, but the hostess was super nice and even offered us some home made meritage (cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot). MMMMm, it was so good that we begged her to sell us some... and she just gave us two bottles instead.

Anyhow... after a glass of wine, we both crashed.

Saturday morning we had a nice breakfast with another couple staying at the B&B. Then we were off to Marynissen, tour at Reif, lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake, sampling Peller Estates (I could have done without it...too busy, too big, service was crabby) then it started to rain. Not badly, but enough that cycling wasn't so much fun anymore.

So we got back to the B&B, showered and changed and got in the car. We went back to Marynissen and picked up the bottles of wine we promised to get. Then to Frogpond (see R42K?) and Coyote's Run. Let's just say I was feeling quite fine by this point.

Then back to the B&B for a little down time before dinner.

YUMMY dinner at the Old Winery Restaurant. YUM! I highly recommend it.

Sunday we packed the bikes in the car and went off to Southbrook, Hillebrand and Strewn. Had a yummy lunch at Strewn and then into Niagara-on-the-Lake again to check out the Dansk 70-80% off sale. We got a nice little serving bowl for $17.

It was a lot of fun, and I think that next time we should go with friends. That would be such a hoot! Do people even say hoot anymore? I forgot to mention that our B&B also provided us with a bottle of home made ice wine. YUM! I've recently realized that I really enjoy it!

So all in all, 12 bottles of red wine, 1 bottle of white wine (I KNOW!! CRAZY!) 1 bottle of sparkling wine and 3 bottles of ice wine. Just a little bit of an investment!

Wine and bikes

We're off to Niagara for the weekend. It will be a weekend of wine tasting, and weather permitting... biking. Hopefully we can cycle around to the wineries, because I really don't feel like being a DD. I'm usually completely game, but this weekend? No.

We plan to go to Hillebrand, Inniskillin, Peller Estates and a few smaller wineries such as Coyote's Run, Reif, Srewn, etc, etc. Hopefully the weather cooperates. Hopefully we can do some drunken cycling!!

Hopefully I have some fun stories to share upon our return!!

Made it!

Well, we did our 5 day canoe trip, and it was certainly awesome!

Long story short:

__- we were lucky that we've had a lot of rain this year... otherwise we probably would have
___ pushed our canoe more than paddled it on the second day
__- all the dehydrated food worked out amazingly well!! GO ME!
pasta
__- we saw up to 30 or so loons
__- we saw about 15 blue herons
__- we saw two moose (or parts of them... me... I saw ears)
__- we were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO lucky with the weather
____-considering we booked this trip back in April, we really lucked out with sun filled days
_____for 80% of our trip!
dickson
__- we saw a muskrat
__- we re-learned that a water filter is REALLY important and it really sucks when it breaks...
__- we learned that Lake Lavieille can be a real peach with a strong north wind
lavieille
__- we saw some amazingly huge (i.e., 35m tall) white pines
__- we saw some 350 year old red pines
__- we saw some super cool and huge hemlocks
__- we did a 5300m (3.3 miles) portage in 1 hour and 42 minutes. ROCK ON!

The trip was really amazing and halfway through it I was already wishing it was longer. Considering it was our first just the two of us... I can see this being the first of many!

Guilty as charged

food
DEHYDRATED! At the back is a good sized moose roast made into two baggies worth of jerky. A small head of broccoli, one medium carrot and three mushrooms (to be put in a pasta sauce - soon to be dehydrated as well). Homemade refried beans to be made into burritos in the middle of Algonquin Park!

It all started innocently enough. We're planning to do a 5 day canoe trip in two weeks and I thought I should find ways to lessen the weight of our food pack...

I'm having lots of fun with the food dehydrator, though. Probably too much fun... this could get addictive.

Now pardon me while I scan my fridge and cupboards for more things to dehydrate...

Off camping

Short post to say that we're off camping with Thom's family this weekend. Should be great.

Us, his siblings and their two little ones... on their first camping trip ever. Could be very interesting, but I'm sure we'll have many memories come out of this trip.

Have a great weekend everyone, and a very special happy long weekend to the Canadians in the crowd! :)

Skin, kids and getting things done!

So I've had not so good skin for many years. In high school I had approximately 100 zits on my forehead for a good few months. I've had bouts of good skin, but for the most part, I worry about being the person with the 'bad skin'. It sucks.

Recently I've gotten a brutal patch of nasties on my neck, under my jawline. They really suck, they're really ugly and they F'ing hurt. These aren't your regular day to day, garden variety zits. These are zits that take about a week to develop, don't really develop and take about a month to go away, all the while leaving a nice little subcutaneous bump. Eventually that subsides, but that takes about TWO months.

For crying out loud, I'm 30... not 15! I know all that stuff about adult acne, but come on!

I've been going to get facials for the past 6 months in hopes that I can tame them, but nothing. So a couple weeks ago I decided to give Proactiv a try. Those TV commercials really wear you down, I say!

So the day after I tried the 'refining mask', they actually looked better. I was shocked. Perhaps it was just that the redness was gone. I've been using everything for about a week now, and while my skin looks better... it has also dried out a lot in areas where the zits are not. To the point where it feels scaly. Hence I didn't use it two days ago and was very selective when I used stuff last night.

We'll see how this goes, but I am cautiously optimistic that this Proactiv will get rid of these horrible zits. I'd like to care about other things, thanks.

Not so good segway...

On Wednesday we had some friends and their kids over for dinner. I've had a personal belief that these kids can be problematic. Their parents are pretty relaxed in how they are raising them, and I have a hard time with that. I was all worried that our house would become a battle zone and that I would have to spend hours cleaning up... but I didn't. They were far more controlled in our house than in theirs. We had a nice night.

With all this parenting content on my blog, I should probably have kids of my own so that I can show people how it's really done right? ;) The sick thing is that I believe that to a point...

Another poor segway...

And back to the house content, because it's oh so exciting. We had a plumber drop by last night to check on some of the stuff around the house.

Stuff like:

__- everytime the kitchen sink drains, a bit of water ends up in the dishwasher and then it sits ___there (because we don't use it). It's nasty. We're getting that fixed.
__- everytime the sink drains, the connection to the main drain in the basement leaks... pouring
___water all over the basement floor. Fortunately the floor drain is only 6 feet away.
___Fortunately that will now be fixed.
__- He's installing a water filter we bought for the house. Bye bye chlorine!
__- fixing some of the work we did in the bathroom - no we're not professional plumbers...

We could have addressed some of this ourselves, but instead, we're actually getting it done and are able to move on to other things on our list of 47 things to do. PLUS, we might even get rid of the 'false drain' in the basement. Apparently years and years ago there was a big scare about how rats could get into your house via the drain and up into your toilet. So they installed all these false drains that vent to outside and have a fun little trap to drown the rats that can't swim (seriously!). Anyhow, it's a good 'main drain' sized pipe (cast iron? huge galvanized pipe? I don't know) that will now be gone. It's in a seriously inconvenient spot, so getting rid of it will be good.

So that's another update from around here. Pretty boring, but very much my life right now!

Have a great weekend! I'm going to spend mine outside and listening to some great live music at the Hillside Festival. We'll be seeing Broken Social Scene, Danny Michel, Hawksley Workman and many others. I can't wait! I just hope the rain can!

going's on

This morning began with the sun in the east and a solid rain overhead. I love mornings like this! I just wish I could stay in bed and listen to the rain falling through the trees.

So I have to say that I'm feeling more and more happy about our new house. Painting the living room and dining room has had a huge impact on the house... well the bottom floor anyway. It's FINALLY starting to look like ours! As much as that level of focus on our house was unsustainable, it's amazing how great it feels go get something done! The next room to focus on is the kitchen and then other than the sunroom (and it's constant drama!) and the hallway, the main floor will be done!

But the thing is, we're pretty much booked up for the summer, so anything we do will have to be done on the weekdays. Huh... Like that's achievable! We are off to a music festival this weekend, then camping with Thom's siblings the following weekend. The weekend after that we are actually here, then to the cottage and then on our long awaited canoe trip in Algonquin.

Thom and I have been planning this trip for years and years and years. It's the Dickson - Lavieille Lake loop. 85km over five days and lots of portages apparently. It also has one of the longest (if not the longest) portage in the park - 5km. Should be fun. What appeals to us most about this trip is that it's pretty much in the centre of the park. We're so looking forward to it!

And then we're pretty much into Labour Day weekend. My the summers go fast, no?

News on the family front. My mom has recently moved provinces to an even more remote location. The pictures she sends back are amazing! Good thing I set up that Flickr site for her! And finally, she went PRO! She needs to. She just bought herself a Sony A350.

Our relationship is getting better, so I'm making good on that one goal I set for myself back in April at the retreat I went to. It's important to me to have a good relationship with her... but it is going to take a while. I'm guarded, you know?

I'm also making good on another goal... losing weight. I'm down to 168.6lbs (according to the scale this morning). I need to be at 167lbs by the middle of August, and then 162lbs by October if I'm reaching 157lbs by Christmas. I do need to focus though...

OOooh ooh, Canada Post just dropped off my book club books! Yes... before 7:30am!! I love parcels! :)

Next we're reading The Year of Living Biblically - about a guy who decides to live BY THE BIBLE for a year. Sounds interesting! And then sometime in the next few months we'll read Water for Elephants and The Memory Keeper's Daughter.

Book club has been going well. We're up to 18 people though, and that's a little huge. Last week only half of that showed up and that was fine with me. I started this book club with a group of 8-10 in mind and then other people just kept inviting others!!!! I guess I can't control everyone, but sheesh! How many people can host 18 people in their house?!?!

I know that realistically, some people will just drop out... but I wish people would think before they invited others... but I guess that's just me.

Alright, off to work for me! Have a good one!

Lucky lucky!

I just found two fiftys in a little over the shoulder bag I haven't touched in about three years. I have absolutely no idea where they come from or what they were intended for!

I should hide that little bag in the bottom of my 'randomly used clothes' bin more often!

;)

Fridge Magnet Poetry #1

We have a nice smattering of fridge magnet poetry options at our place. The regular version, Oh Canada version and the comforting and encouragement (I think... something nice like that) version.

Thom is amazingly deep sometimes. Here's one of his creations. I really like it.

we're getting there!

Two nights where I have been up until midnight has resulted in some progress. Unfortunately we won't be able to finish up until Friday, but we're almost there!

WOOHOO!

Continuing on in the land of the sucky blogger

Well, it has once again been a very busy few weeks since my last post.

Did that sound like a confession? Huh...

It has been busy and in thinking back, I can't think of what I've been up to. Kind of strange. Here are a few highlights.

- I spent two days with my sister in her current "out of province" town. The main reason
_was because she graduated!!! I'm so happy! It was great to spend time with her.

- I spent four days at the cottage during the Canada Day weekend, that wasn't really a
_weekend, but I took the Monday off to make it an extra long weekend! Three nights in
_a row of 10+ hours of sleep. Woot!

- I've recently become obsessed with quinoa.

- Patched the holes in the living room and dining room left by the insulation guys.

- Thom is on a canoe trip with his dad and I'm all by my lonesome. That's OK! :)
___- I'm going to spend a lot of time watching the Sex and the City seasons I most
____recently 'acquired'

- Am in the process of taping the windows to prep them for painting TODAY!

- Wishing we didn't have such cute partitioned upper windows. Cute, but a pain in the
_ass to tape.

Behold!
windows of intanity

That's about it. Next week I'm off to a facilitation course. That should be pretty alright. And next weekend, our 'camping' plans with some friends fell through, and I'm really happy about it. Seriously! We're so busy this summer that an extra weekend at home sounds great to me. Funny how that works sometimes, eh?

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Yeah, yeah... I'm here

Well, the past few weeks have brought quite a bit of insanity, but that's the way it goes sometimes, right?

Quick recap:

- house is now insulated.
- new roof seemingly doesn't leak any more (after three visits by the contractor)
- bought a BBQ last night
- I've been to Sudbury and back
- I've been to Toronto and back
- went to my second three day workshop for that course I'm doing. It was amazing.
- off to see my sister graduate next week. Yep... she's graduating! YAY!

I still feel quite drained, but I think we're on the upswing. Now that we've patched most of the holes left by the insulation guys, we just need to TSP the walls, patch again with drywall mud, sand, mud, sand... and then we can paint!! I really hope that happens this weekend!!!!!!

Really!

Formal

As I walked home from work this afternoon, I noticed a group of 10-12 teens gathering near a fountain for their formal picture. It made me smile. It reminded me of my formal night, almost exactly 12 years ago.

Tonight, parents were swarming around taking pics while others were standing on the periphery just taking it all in. It was great. It made me smile that all these kids were totally excited about their formal night. They were laughing and being loud. Cracking jokes. All sorts of stuff. The excitement was palpable. Who knows who might get lucky? Who knows who might get totally hammered? Who knows who's night will live up to the expectation of being 'one of the most important nights of your life'?

Not only all of that, but most of these kids are probably off to university this coming September. That's super exciting and terrifying all at the same time.

Formal, prom, whatever you call it can be a multitude of things to people.

For me it was an exciting evening to spend with friends. It was an evening to show the other people I went to school with that I could look really nice. For god knows what reason, I felt the need to display that to people. Still do, actually...

So the evening started with me being picked up by a guy friend of mine (F) that I had met through my boyfriend. I had asked him to accompany me to my formal because my boyfriend at the time was in the army reserves and was otherwise engaged. Nothing like being stood up at your high school formal by your boyfriend!!! As an aside, we were supposed to go to his formal as a consolation prize, but he ended up lying to me about it being cancelled and thus ended the official part of our relationship. But that's an entirely other story...

So the evening started with F picking me up. We then went to one of my high school buddies places for some appetizers before we all scooted off to a nice place for dinner. Most of us ended up getting food poisoning by the end of the night, but I don't feel too bad about that because the place wasn't my suggestion... My place was overruled.

Moving on! Sheesh...

The formal itself was pretty fun. I wore my hair up in a French roll, the corsage that F brought me and a navy blue dress that had navy blue lace over top and buttons down the front. I'm definitely not a lace person, but it was subtle enough that I went for it. Even then I had a hard time finding stuff to fit my body, so I settled. I ended up having the same dress as another person at the formal, but she wore the little jacket that came with it, so that's fine.

There's a nice little picture of me and my disembodied hand. Doesn't it kind of look like it's attacking me? Anyhow, this is the only picture of formal that I could snag quickly. I clipped it from a photo posted on a high school buddy's Facebook profile. Yay Facebook for reliving that fateful evening.

So yeah, the actual formal evening was fun. Dancing... some nibbles... a lame plastic champagne glass.

I do regret not spending some of it with my good friend L, but at that time, we were with different friend groups. She was an ultra popular gal who was on all the sports teams and friends with all the hot guys... and I was... well... too much of a nerd to give a shit about what people thought of me. I was invited out a few times with L and the 'popular kids', but I always thought they really disliked me. They were probably indifferent, but that's irrelevant at this point. I do wish I had a pic of me and L on that night though. That would be a nice keepsake.

So after formal we went bowling. Yes, bowling... in our formal wear. It was fun! There's a good picture of all of my buddies and I standing in front of the lanes. Terribly classy.

Then we went back to someone's house, had a drink or two and went to bed. By this point some of my buddies were puking as a result of the evening's dinner. "An evening to remember!"

So the long and the short of it is that formal was a fairly good time but it certainly didn't live up to the hype for me. I didn't get hammered and forget where I was. It wasn't the BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE (up to that point). I didn't lose my virginity. That had happened years before. Hell, my boyfriend didn't even go with me! Mind you, F did propose a "friends with benefits" kind of thing that night. Something along the lines of casual sex among friends. Yeah, I didn't go for it. He wasn't really my type. In hind sight, he was a good guy and well.... let's move on, shall we?

Actually, no, let's not move on. The crazy thing is... my boyfriend at the time? Yeah, he ended up marrying F's fiancée from that time. Figure that one out! Yeah, should have gone for it... ;)

OK, back to friends and stuff.

The thing is, while L and I were kind of on the outs around that time in our lives, she's the only one I still talk to from high school. Facebook has put me in touch with a few folks from that night and that time in my life, but there's nothing there. Casual hellos, we should get togethers and well intentioned, but lacking in emotion, happy birthdays... are the extent of our friendships. Isn't that funny? Hell, one of them won't even acknowledge me via Facebook. God knows what I did to her, but it was obviously HORRIBLE!

So what was your formal evening like? Did you even go? Did it live up to it's expectation? What did you wear? Who did you spend it with? Do you still talk to them?

Share with me! Come on, reliving high school is fun!!!

Bit of an update

tulips
Well, my posts lately have been a little lackluster, but I'm not going to apologize. It's just the way things have been. You know, busy...

House: Things with the house have hit a bit of a plateau. I think we actually burnt ourselves a bit there with all the work we were doing. We haven't done much in a couple weeks, and honestly, I think that's OK.

Today the roofers were supposed to put a good effort into making our flat roof not so flat anymore, but alas, they screwed up and now they can't start until Monday. Let's just say that I'm VERY HAPPY that we happened to come home today at lunch and notice that things were not going as they were supposed to. I can't wait until I no longer panic about rain. That'll be a nice treat.

We've spoken with some contractors about insulating our house via foam or cellulose insulation, blown through holes in the walls. Currently we have no insulation and for a house in Canada, this is a bit of a problem. So anyhow, we have a rough idea of what the insulation will cost, and I am quite happy that the government of Canada is quite supportive of this kind of endeavor. A friend of ours did their place a few years ago and had approximately 80% of the cost covered. Sweet! So anyhow, we have a bit of work to do and a bit of cash to shell out. Fortunately we would have done this work anyway, and it's simply a bonus to get a refund!

My favorite part about all this? Once the insulation is done with, we can FINALLY paint the walls. Other than the bathroom, the house is in the same state as it was when we moved in; only the wallpaper has been removed. It's a tiny bit ghetto chic. Ha, hardly, but I can't wait to paint!

On the positive side, our garden is coming up nicely. We have chosen to leave everything alone this year so that we can see what comes up. So far we have: tulips, daffodils, lilies, one rose, Solomon's seal, lily-of-the-valley, peonies, bunch of different hostas, irises, hollyhocks (far too many if you ask me), etc. On the food side we have rhubarb (WOOHOO! Can't wait to eat it!), a currant bush (I think) and mint. It really is a nice bunch of gardens. It'll be great to put our own mark on it next year. I think I'll add some delphiniums, more irises and more peonies. It'll be great. Plus, we intend to turn the piece of grass in our front yard into garden, as our neighbours have done. It'll look so much better. The grass is crap anyway and I think it would be hard to mow with our new push mower.

So essentially, although we haven't done much since we moved in, the house still dominates our time. Strange. I guess it's something we'll have to get used to!

Moving on!

Work: Work is going OK, but I recently took on a whole new responsibility. It's fine, but adding a bunch more work. Plus we have a big project that's about to get going and that's going to add a whole other layer of craziness. Good times. Enough about work. Work's work.

THE CLEANSE!: Things are going fine. I'm still quite hungry, but tomorrow is the last day, so I'll be done soon enough! I have lost 5lbs since Sunday though. That's a nice side effect... a good start on the 15 lbs I want to lose by Christmas. Sure I'll gain some of the 5 back, but it's motivation.

Summer plans: Well, the summer is going to be ultra busy. Thom and I decided to finally do a 5 day canoe trip in Algonquin (for the unaware, Algonquin is a sizeable park - click Map to see the boundary) that we've been planning for years. It includes two shuttles across Lake Opeongo and 5km portage on the last day. Fabulous! Actually, I'm looking very forward to it. After the hiking trips we've taken the past two summers, a wee 5km portage doesn't frighten me. I'll probably eat my words, but right now I'm confident.

We will also be spending a few weekends at the cottage. In fact, we're going for Victoria Day weekend next week. It'll be buggy, but great. It's nice to have everything so "close" again.

And, after waiting in line last weekend, we will be going to a music festival with some friends. I'm looking very forward to it. It's always a good time and this year we have some company!

My goals: I haven't made much headway on these. I really need to get cracking. My next workshop with everyone is during the first week of June. I should probably have something to say about it.

I can't think of anything else to write. I'm sure there is plenty left unsaid, but this is already a longish post.

Cleansing... Day 4

OK, so Day 2 was easier than Day 1, Day 3 was easier than Day 2 and Day 4 was certainly better than Day 3.

So why is it I'm completely starving? Ugh.

Only 3 days to go...

I have to say, however, that I've gained an appreciation for what you can do with a tight food list. I think I'll keep making these recipes once I'm done with all of this.

For example, last night's dinner was:

1 sm onion (I can have unlimited onions!) fried in 1 tablespoon of butter
then I added 1 sliced up chicken thigh
then I added 1/2c tomato
then I added 1/2c wild rice (pre cooked), 1/2c cooked swiss chard and oregano

All cooked together. It was yummy!

Cleansing... day 1

OK, so I got the bright idea to do a cleanse. You know, one of those digestive tract numbers.

It's a seven day process, and I have to say that Day 1 has been kind of rough.

The box coyly puts it that some people feel a sense of "lightness". Me? I just feel ultra hungry, kind crabby and a bit stoned... let's hope this ends soon. Otherwise it's going to be a long 7 days.

Good to know

I attribute my ability to being able to kick above 3 feet high. I think that's the ticket.

In other news, I made it to the gym this morning. Perhaps that will help me in my endeavors...

Watch it!

I just received this via email and although I knew most of it (well, kinda), I think it's a great way to present this kind of info.

If you have 20 minutes, give it a watch. I'd be interested in knowing what you think!

Divided

iceI've decided that I'm in a constant battle with myself. I'm a bit of an enigma, even to myself.

I'm not trying to make myself sound mysterious or anything, but I really feel like I'm trying to figure myself out right now. It's probably because of that retreat I went to a couple weeks ago.

One side of me wants to be outgoing. This side of me is very much a part of me and pokes it's head out every once in a while when I'm feeling confident or being witty. It is the side that wants to be noticed and challenged. It is the side of me that wants to have friends over all the time and to have a house filled with side splitting laughter and good times. It is the side of me that wants to break free a bit from the more quiet and reserved side of me; the side that wants to go to bars or raves and dance up a storm.

The other side very much retreats to the safety zones. This side really cares what people think and only wants them to think nice things. This side has a tough time of picking up the phone to call friends and invite them over for dinner (and at times begs Thom to do the calling). This side spends WAY too much time at home. This side bothers me a bit.

The thing is, it is the second side that does most of the ruling over me. It is generally only friends who see the first side of me. These friends would possibly call me an extrovert.

Today I was at a meeting with a new colleague and following the meeting he said that he was surprised with how I was at the meeting. We had a conversation last week about we were both introverts. He thought that I was far more outgoing than he expected.

You see, I feel a bit odd. While I score very high in the introvert scale, I can be quite vocal and outgoing, and sometimes downright witty and funny. I find it hard to approach people when I don't know them, yet I chat up people at the grocery store. I really care about not looking like an ass in front of people and at the same time I'll do some pretty embarrassing things to get a laugh. I'm generally pretty quiet and think out what I'm going to say in advance and yet at times my mind propels me to speak before I've completely thought something through. And finally, part of me completely wishes I could be more like E and just do something risky and take off somewhere while the other side of me thinks "Jesus, how stupid are you?".

I need to give this a bit of thought and figure out what the hell I need. It's like I want the rewards of being more outgoing, but I don't want to do the work... I think this is going to be a long discovery.

Does anyone else ever feel conflicted like this? Anyone have any advice?

Happenings

WARNING: It's a long one! ... and not very organized!

The past week (OK... month...) has been super busy and I have to say that I'm happy the craziness is nearing it's end! There is absolutely no way that this kind of living could be sustainable!

We are about 95% done with the bathroom. All that remains to be done is to find a mirror and light fixture we like (for above the mirror - currently we're dabbling in minimalistic chic by having only a bare lightbulb), buy and install towel racks and a toilet paper holder and buy and build a little cabinet to hold our toilettries, etc. The major stuff, demo, rebuild, tiling and painting is done. It feels great to say that.

The hardwood turned out beautiful as well. When I see floors like this I wonder what goes through people's minds when they choose to cover them up. Crazy! The interesting thing is that upstairs in our house they used 2nd rate wood which means that it's more red than the wood on the mainfloor. I think it might actually be a mix of red and white oak. Incredibly gorgeous in my opinion!

So we moved in last weekend. My dad and stepmom came up to help us. I wasn't too pleased when I found out my stepmom was coming as well. She takes so much more effort than my dad. Anyhow, I've found that lately my stepmom is joining my dad more often when he comes up to visit. She's usually too busy... but lately she's been around. Hmmm. My thought? I think she's using me as a surrogate for my sister.

My sister did end up moving away and she has been out of the immediate area for two months now. I've spoken to her a few times and at first she was totally psyched and "never felt happier". More recently she was having difficulty with her days feeling very unproductive. I think real life caught up to her a bit.

Moving on.

Last week I went to a leadership workshop for three days. It's the first of a few get togethers and it was really amazing. I was quite impressed how quickly the group of 20 or so got comfortable with each other. It was nice.

The first day was mostly a meet and greet to get to get to know one another.

The second day was full of self assessments. Here's what I found out.

Using the True Colours system, I am a gold. Boring old gold...

"a need to be responsible, to fulfill duties and obligations, to organize and structure our life and that of others"

The nice thing this time around (I've done it before) is that I wasn't alone. I've always been the only person in the gold group and this time I had others with me. As silly as it seems, I was relieved... Relieved to know that I 'belonged'. Funny how that's a characteristic of gold; to want to belong.

The second self assessment was a basic introvert/extrovert test. Let's just say I'm a little on the introvert side... yeah... I got 29/30 on the introvert scale. It's a wonder I can even function! ;)

The third self assessment was the Keirsey Temperament test, where amazingly I came out as an introvert again!! I am ISFJ (the Protector) and one of the four Guardian personalities.

"If you want it done right, do it yourself"
In the absence of positive feedback, or in the face of criticisms, the ISFJ gets discouraged

I can't remember what the final test was, but it was all very interesting. While I don't believe whole heartedly in these tests, they certainly come close to describing me. Of course there are a few outliers.

In addition to doing the self assessments, we also learned our leadership styles. Unshockingly, my leadership style is to encourage others. I don't 'challenge the system' or take many risks.

What I also learned is that I've felt most happy in my life when I've taken risks and been challenged:

___- when I asked Thom (remember my new name for that darling husband of mine?) out
___- M.Sc. (field work)
___- any time I've been dropped into a situation I wasn't sure I could handle.

What this tells me is that I need to challenge myself (or be challenged) more. In order to have satisfaction in my life, I need to be challenged.

I signed up for this workshop to help me figure a few things out in my life... in particular my employment hopes and desires. At present I'm not sure if my current job, or current employer, is where I want to be. I've told myself that it's where I want to be, but essentially I think I'm just being lazy. Comfortable. Complacent.

Through this workshop I've also had to come up with at least four goals.

__Spiritual: To do something for someone else. I endeavor to volunteer for something I
__believe in (women and children's rights, environmental causes), outside of Canada.
__I heard so many inspirational stories at this workshop, and I really need to give back.
__I aim to do this by December 2009.

__Family: I am going to focus on having a better relationship with my mom. I know that
__I need her in my life. Although my therapist said that it's not necessarily my job to do
__so, I need to do something to work forward... I aim to have more patience and
__understanding with my mom by December 2008.

__Health: I want to lose 15 lbs by December 2008 by eating better and exercising more
__regularly. I know this will benefit me.

__Professional: I want to have a job that challenges and inspires me by December 2009.
__This is going to take a little soul searching as I don't know what I want to do with my life!

So the past month has been a little busy... really good... but really tiring! I am looking very forward to just painting for the next little while. We're still going to be living with our student-esque furniture for a while, but that's OK. The place is starting to look a little more like ours and it can only get better, right?

We're in!

Well, following a crazy whirlwind move (thanks to my ultra motivated dad and stepmom!!) we're finally in our house. There are still a thousand things to do, but we're finally 'home'.

It feels great.

Big shocker

Well when I arrived home from work today, That Husband Of Mine (now to be referred to as THOM or Thom...) informed me that our neighbours apartment had been crawling with 4 of the biggest cops he's ever seen.

This would be asshole neighbour I am speaking of... Yeah, apparently asshole neighbour has been dealing coke.

Splendid.

Honey, I dare say that it's time to move!

Death warmed over...

sustenance
Well, I don't really feel that bad, but I'm feeling pretty horrid today... Ugh. What a way to end the Easter weekend! I was ever granted the day off too!! Hardly fair! My müesli from 7:00am this morning isn't sitting too well... and that's all I've had to eat today! Let's just say that this bottle of Perrier is my buddy...

It was a good weekend, regardless of how I feel today.

Did a bunch of stuff over at the house, such as moving a few things over and preparing the rooms for hardwood refinishing (ie. cleaning them out!). That took an entire day!

Visited with J's family and had Easter dinner.

Although I have absolutely no right to comment, I was frustrated by how J's sisters were treating their children's naptimes. It seemed as if everyone had to completely walk on eggshells! Speak quietly! Don't walk down the hall near the bedroom because the floor creaks! Don't run the water in the kitchen (under the bedroom) on full! Should we run the dishwasher? I was a little put off by being asked to keep it down.. but I know that parents have the rights to raise their kids the way they want. Conversely, my personal thought is that kids have to learn to deal with noise, and no time is soon enough. Thoughts?

We also dropped by to visit my dad's mom. From what I've been hearing from my dad lately, I wasn't sure she was going to make it to the weekend, but she did and she was having a really good day. Had a few bites to eat and some water. Considering she had spent a few days in a row sleeping, this was good news. J and I visited with her for about two hours and it was great. She snoozed for part of the visit and struggled with speaking, but I know she was happy to see us there.

During the visit another resident of the facility dropped by. She doesn't seem to have all her faculties (repeated herself 10-15 times), but what was clear was her liking of my grandma. She teared up while in the room and kept saying, "She's going to pull out of this..." and "She's a lovely woman". Really sweet and so very touching. It's great to hear good things about people you care about from their peers.

So we're officially in the single digits of the countdown to the move. I'm so excited to get out of this apartment (although the apartment itself is fine...) and away from the asshole neighbour. He has taken to averting his eyes since "the confrontation"... good...

Back to laying on the couch for me.

2 weeks to go

Wow... what a week it has been!

A few things have changed at the house in the past week, and it's really great to see some progress!! We are now very much in the rebuilding of the bathroom phase and today the drywall is going up!! YAY!

On Monday and Tuesday, the tile is going in! YAY!

And the electrician we hired to rewire the house (it had very old wiring and even some knob and tube!) was able to rewire the diningroom light without destroying the nice plaster ceiling! YAY! And the front hall light. YAY!

99% of the wallpaper has been stripped. YAY!

On top of all that, we get our appliances this week, the hardwood gets refinished next week and the first quote we got for redoing the roof over the sunroom was quite a bit lower than we thought. Triple YAY!

Things are going quite well, knock on wood, and I'm looking forward to finally moving in! Only two weeks to go...

Then it will be all about fixing some cracks in the plaster walls, painting and setting up shop. Then maybe, just maybe, we can buy some adult furniture! I can't wait!

And by adult furniture I don't mean chunky wood with leather straps or anything, but stuff that can't be broken down into little pieces to facilitate moving all over the province... Just wanted to clarify! :)

Shaking

I'm shaking with anger and adrenaline right now.

My asshole neighbour just confronted me in the hallway and told me that if he wants to have sex with his 'old lady' that he should damnwell not need to apologise for it.

While this may be true, he damnwell should answer for something coming through those walls.

Last night after spending the entire afternoon and evening working on the house, J and I were really tired and crashed into bed. Around 1:00am a pounding came through the walls and I thought it was yet another occurrence of my neighbour being an asshole. Well, apparently this noise was sex...

On a weekly basis we hear the following come through the walls:

__"Shut up you fucking bitch"
__"You're a stupid fucking c***"
__"Shut the fuck up"
__"I want my money back you cocksucker"
__...etc, etc.

I'm sure you get the idea. My neighbour also likes to have gatherings of loud men that last well into the early hours of morning. Last night I wasn't about to let any noise, coming through the walls, slide.

So anyhow I was confronted this morning on my way to the car and he said, "I know these walls are paper thin, but we all need to live together".

Sure, asshole... for another three weeks.

I really should have said, "Do you hear us through the walls? Have we ever bothered you with our music or discussion or gatherings". I'm sure the answer would have been no, because we're aware of this kind of thing. I also should have confronted him with "I'd rather not hear (insert assholish thing here) through the walls and maybe you could keep it down".

Then again, I might have ended up with a black eye... He has a real knack with women.

Booooooooooooo

OK, so that lovely sunroom of ours?

Yeah... the previous owners simply ignored the leak in the roof.... for a decade!

My dad ripped down the pine ceiling cover, then the shitty acoustic tile and then the plaster board... all to reveal one fully, and several partially, rotten 2x10 boards.

Who exactly leaves a leak that long?

Thank you previous owners. We are now officially in the red. : (

Tunes

I'm a huge music fan. Music is super important to me and it has been my entire life. I was brought up surrounded by music. I swear my dad was one of those first people to buy a CD player. I am one of those people who likes to have music going ALL THE TIME. Although I can appreciate the relative silence of being outdoors (and would never bring an mp3 player on a hike), I almost always have music going in some way or another. In the car. At home (either mp3s played on the computer or CDs in the player). At work. At the gym. Anywhere I can control my auditory surroundings, I do.

While my dad has certainly been a huge influence in my musical upbringing, so have my friends. Introducing friends to new music is such a cool way to share! :)

So, in the spirit of The Hour's Operation Disk Drop, I've been dreaming up a way to share music and have music shared with me. What do you think? Are people up for this? Much like the holiday card exchange, this would be a simple exchange of CDs.

What I propose is that whoever would like a CD from me, including some of my favorite tunes, should email me their address. I promise not to use it for any nasty things and I promise no stalking either... honest! ;) Seriously though... I won't have time for stalking, I have a house to fix!

C'mon... it'll be fun!

Snippets of home

We've really started to get excited about the potential of our new home. Sure the next few weeks are going to be completely batty, but that's just a part of home ownership, right?

I thought I would share a few snippets of our new place. I've decided to include some of the more interesting features for the sake of amusement alone. Now please keep in mind that the folks who lived here have been here for years and they are an older couple...

The master bedroom is currently sporting some very lovely wallpaper, border and window coverings. Not only do the window coverings and border match, but the carpet in the bedroom is also a lovely dark tealy green!

The fun fan in the 'back' bedroom. What makes this fan fun is not only the design on the fan itself, nor the fun lightbulb... but the double receptacle. When someone installed the fan, they chose to put in an entirely different supply box for the electricity rather than use the one that was already there. Not quite sure why, but that's what they did. Something for the electrician to deal with.

The famous bathroom:

Well what you see here will not be in existence when we get our hands on the bathroom and completely gut and rebuild it. In some ways it's a shame because just look at this border!!! Isn't it beautiful? Usually I just look at wall paper and wall paper products and shake my head, but in a bathroom? That's just wrong!

And now the real piece de resistance.... the toilet. Not only is it a beautiful swirly grey-green-purple, but it's also outfitted with a MASSIVE tank! I swear we could fit our entire new toilet in the tank alone! The funny thing is, we're thinking of moving the tank to the basement to use it as an indoor pool... seriously though, we're going to put a few thousand bricks (or other) in the toilet to reduce the volume and use it as a backup toilet in the basement.

Now to the things we like. Or more, the things we LOVE about the house.

While the carpet in the house is widespread, as is the wall paper, we have some inside information that the floor under the carpet is hardwood (yes, they're dirty... shush!). We're going to rip that carpet up and refinish the hardwood so that the house just shines! We're not sure if we're going to sand the floors and refinish ourselves or hire someone to do it. We're going to get some quotes to make that decision for us.

In addition to the floors, there is also some beautiful woodwork in the stairwell. This curly banister is simply too beautiful to ignore. A shot of the banister from upstairs was one of the things that really caught us when we were looking at the house online. So much character!

Anyhow, just wanted to share some little things about the house! We intend to really bring this house to it's potential, and we intend to make it far more efficient (energy, heat and water) than it currently is.

It's official (Part II)

Well, we signed the mortgage papers today and our insurance should be cleared by Monday. We meet with the lawyer sometime towards the end of next week and we officially have possession the week after that. Our official move in date will be towards the end of March since we paid for our last month's rent last September.

Here's a couple of things that need to be done (in no particular order):
- Wet seal the slice in the rubber roof on the sunroom
__(oh yeah, can I tell you how much I wish I could have done this the day we put the offer in?
__Nothing like watching the snow fall, and then melt, and think about all that water that should
__and could be stopped from entering our sunroom!!)
- rip up carpet
- refinish hardwood under carpet
- hope above hope that the hardwood is OK to refinish and doesn't need extra love
- rewire house (to be detailed later!)
- replace rotting beam in crazy cold cellar-y room in the basement
- re-insulate floor of attic
- remove 20ft length of galvanized pipe in basement and replace with copper
- remove wallpaper, remove wallpaper, remove wallpaper, plaster some cracks and paint, paint paint!
- and last, but not least, completely renovate the bathroom...

What's that? The bathroom is one of the most expensive rooms to renovate? What's that? We've already put most of our savings into a down payment? And we need to buy a fridge and stove??

Such meaningless points!!

Let's do it anyway!

Before we move in, we really need to redo the bathroom. Officially it would be fine, but the peeling laminate floor, 1,000 gallon toilet and hideous vanity need to go. We figure that without a bathroom, one can't really live in a house, so why not completely redo the bathroom before we move in?

The past week has brought several visits to Home Depot, Rona and some local building/tiling/appliance stores. The past week has also brought conversations with dads and advice from coworkers. It's going to be one hell of a ride from next week until the end of March.

We've asked the dads if they can help. We've asked some friends if they can help. We've decided that we can probably do the floor tile ourselves. We've decided that if possible, the dads can help us with plumbing, electrical and demo. We've decided that the bathtub tile will probably need to be done by someone who really knows what they're doing. And, we've pretty much decided that we'll need a contractor for some other stuff. So much to figure out in the next 6 weeks!

On top of all this, the entire house should be rewired soon. While we could just go with what's there for a little while, why not just get it done? It's a pretty major thing and we would both rather it get done before we move in. Then the inconvenience of moving stuff around won't hinder us from getting it done. I think we'll be asking for a parental short term loan.

Anyhow, that's it for now. I predict an awful lot of house posts in the next two months...

It's official

We are now proud owners of a 2 story brick home. That is, of course, pending financing and insurance goodies!!

We get possession in three weeks!

Yowza... this is some crazy stuff, this home ownership thing!!

Finito.

snowy trees
It has been quite the week. I'm quite pleased that it is over.

Essentially I went to a sporting event last weekend with J and some friends. It was a good time. Lots of drinks (!!) and lots and lots and lots of laughs. I laughed so hard on Saturday night that my stomach hurt on Sunday. Those kinds of laughs do the body and soul good. Especially after the week I had.

Then I went to the meeting that I helped plan. It was held at a pretty cool venue. I was able to go for nice walks and even a snowshoe. I hate snowshoeing, but I went anyway. Froze my ass off. BUT, it was good. Someday, I might even use the snowshoes that J got me 6 years ago.

So, the meeting was a long'un but a good'un. I'm super happy that it's done with. Without getting into too much detail, I learned a lot.

I learned that we, as a society, have to start treating each other fairly and equally. I learned that what works for one person does not work for another. I learned that trust, respect and friendship will get you a long way. I learned that understanding one another is essentially what we need to do.

Sure, it seems like straight forward stuff, but sometimes it's this kind of stuff that warrants repeating often. It's only through understanding that we will be able to remedy the problems we see around us.

Relief

relief
Well, we put an offer in on a house last night after three viewings... stayed up until 12:30 to hear the news... amended it today at lunch to increase our offer and deposit... and didn't get it.

Honestly? I feel relief more than anything.

Sure it's a bit of a disappointment, but... that's OK. The right place will find us.

I'm not quite sure why I was so strung out on Monday night, but it was just a bunch of things all mashed together and I was having such a hard time finding out which way was up!

The past 48 hours have really been hard. I've wanted to puke. I've wanted to cry. Above all else, I've wanted to sleep. It wasn't one thing in particular, just all of it at once. Work. House. Fatigue. All of it.

But now we've been through the house gauntlet once and we know what to expect. And now that the week is nearing it's end, I know that next week's meeting will be what it is and that's all we can do about that.

It's all about being philosophical.

brain. dowload.

My brain is so full right now that I can't hardly stand it! It's not full of useful things like facts and figures, but full of emotion and full of.... I don't know..... stuff. I'm feeling extremely teary right now, and I think it's all due to what's going on right now.

I feel almost at the breaking point. Nothing to be extremely worried about, but enough that I know I just need a break.

Work has been super busy for about two weeks now, and now we're looking at buying a house. I've put in 14 hours over overtime since January 2nd. Today, I drove 2.5 hours to a meeting and then drove right back after the 5 hour meeting. Stuff like this just isn't sustainable! I don't fully comprehend everything involved with buying this house... or another... (who really does the first time around?) and I'm finding it all very overwhelming.

Ugh. By next Friday, everything will be much better. That, I am sure of.

Love this!

I'm not usually the biggest fan of Feist (just ask J what happened when he bought the first CD), but this song? This song rocks my socks off.

What do you think? I would be interested to know your thoughts!

The week that passed

thai lamp
Cool lamp my sister bought for me in Thailand... too bad the picture got screwed up when I saved it as a smaller pic!

It has been quite the week. I can hardly believe I was off for a week and a bit prior to this. I feel as if I've just been going and going and going since I got back to work on Jan 2nd. CRAZY!

Following a fairly busy three days back at work last week, J and I were back to the homeland (ie. my city of origin). My dad's mom took a real turn for the worse last week, so J and I decided that our much desired ski was nowhere near as important as spending time with my grandma. She has been in a home for two years, and so far she has loved it. You wouldn't believe how often she raves of the food and how well they care for her. It really is home to her now.

I guess last week sometime it was decided that she should head to the hospital. She was having trouble breathing and she was in some pain. In her 92 years, my grandma has only spent 6 times in a hospital. Three of those times were giving birth.

For her pain, my grandma was offered morphene. The first time she turned it down. The second time, she didn't. The third time, she said, "I don't want to become a junkie". How hilarious is that?

Apparently, my grandma was offered morphene several times a day for her pain. Another time, she said, "Just a little bit". My dad was there with her, and he piped up, "I'll take the rest!". My family is a bunch of cards...

Anyhow, my grandma is back at her home. She was extremely tired when we visited her ("They woke me up every 10 minutes!"), but she's doing well. She was happy to see us again, so soon after our Christmas visit.

Following our visit with my grandma, J and I made dinner for my dad and stepmom. We had a fun evening complete with great food and some wine. I had had a GREAT AWESOME FABULOUS visit with my sister the night before, but this evening... she really pissed me off. We won't chat about that.

What I really liked about this total affair is that we were able to pick up and go see my grandma. There were no flights that needed to be planned, we just had to hop in the car. It was so nice to be able to make that decision as soon as we heard my grandma wasn't doing so well.

This past week at work has been INSANE! Friday right before I was about to go home for the night, a manager asked me to attend a meeting in Toronto for Monday and Tuesday of this week. 10 minutes before I'm about to jet, I get this request. CRAZY!

I did attend the meeting, and it was actually very interesting. It wasn't the topic that had me guessing whether or not I should actually attend, but the sheer amount of work I need to do right now. Sheesh!

So anyhow, upon my return to work yesterday, I've just been completely swamped. All the stuff I want/need to do just keeps getting pushed further and further back. I'm one of two people from my work planning a 4 day, fairly large meeting with some other folks and it's all coming down two weeks from now. It's total crunch time. PLUS, the other person is gone for the week. EEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeee! I'm getting tired just thinking about it! I've put in 8.5 hours of overtime in the past week. While this probably isn't that much, it's a lot for me. And I'll most likely be doing some overtime tomorrow night as well.

What else is going on... oh right, off to another meeting on Monday. So that takes up another entire day. My organizing partner is back Monday, but they will have to wait until Tuesday to get an update...

NEXT! We're checking out some houses this weekend. That's exciting. The picture to the right there is from a house we're really interested in. Not necessarily my decor, but whatever... It's also not in the most ideal neighbourhood, but... that can be overlooked for dreamy hardwood and a 16x12 master bedroom, don't you think? Then again, the kitchen is totally dinky, so we'll have to see.

Anyhow, big time adventures in the house hunting department. Cuz I don't have enough going on right now. COULD YOU IMAGINE IF WE ACTUALLY DECIDED TO PUT AN OFFER IN?? J would totally have to take that one on. Then again, is that even fair? Not so much.

In recent news, I have decided that my online pseudonym will be Maia. It can mean: "brave warrior" and "earth goddess of springtime". Describes me perfectly, don't you think?

OK, that's enough of a tiring update for now. Later gators!

Food, yummy food meme

dessert
Borrowed from Anna May who stole it from Running42K.

1. How do you like your eggs?
You know, I used to like my eggs very well cooked. BUT, a couple years ago I went to my cousin's place for breakfast and they didn't ask how I wanted my eggs done. Instead of asking for new ones, I ate the over easy eggs. Now... that's what I eat. If they're scrambled, however, they need to be dry.

2. How do you take your coffee/tea?
I used to have one milk and one sugar in my tea, but lately I've been doing the stevia thing. I eat way too much sugar, so I thought this might be one way to cut back.

3. Favorite breakfast food?
I go in waves. Sometimes I'll do toast and peanut butter. Sometimes I'll do cereal. Lately, however, I've been having muesli and plain yogurt. Sometimes with honey and usually with extra raisins. I first had it in Germany while visiting family, but most recently I had it while visiting my aunt in Toronto. The thing is, though, that she had the ULTRA YUMMY Liberté Mediterranée Vanilla Yoghurt. Yeah, nothing like 50% of your daily saturated fats in one sitting. So. Good.

4. Peanut butter
Usually I like crunch, but we've been buying freshly ground PB and that only comes in one texture which I like to call coarsely ground smooth.

5. What kind of dressing on your salad?
Since we eat salad pretty much every day, there was a period there where J and I would go through a bottle of Kraft dressing in a week (or there abouts). #1 That's kind of gross. #2 Once I found out that Kraft is a division of Phillip Morris, I will no longer buy Kraft. So, lately we've been bouncing between Brianna's French Vinaigrette and a basic balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

6. Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi, although I very seldom drink pop.

7. You’re feeling lazy, what do you make?
Burrito with homemade refrieds from the freezer.

8. You’re feeling really lazy. What kind of pizza do you order?
One of those vegetarian ones from down the road. Possibly with chicken. (Yes, I understand the irony)

9. You feel like cooking. What do you make?
Possibly something from one of our many cookbooks, but most likely something from epicurious.com.

10. Do any foods bring back good memories?
There are these wonderful buns that always show up at the gatherings held by my mom's family. Them and five cup salad (1 cup each of: mandarin oranges, crushed pineapple, coconut, mini marshmallows and sour cream - it might sound disgusting... but I really like it... in small doses).

11. Do any foods bring back bad memories?
Hmmm, don't think so. Well, maybe HUGE pork roasts. Not really a bad memory, but it could have been. For a while when I was young, my mom really didn't have any money and my aunt, who worked at a grocery store, would grab all sorts of stuff they were going to throw away, and give it to my mom. We ended up with many pork roasts and green and yellow peppers. We got so sick and tired of pork roast (in all it's possible forms), but at least we had food, right?

12. Do any foods remind you of someone?
Does anyone remember those cheese wafer crackers? They looked like this, but were smaller and had a weird powdery cheese in them. They remind me of my grandma. She always had them.

13. Is there a food you refuse to eat?
There is very little I won't try. I've tried oysters with lemon and tabasco sauce, but didn't really like them. Unless I was really hungry or needed the money, I most likely will NEVER EVER EVER try balut eggs. I understand that they are a cultural food, but the entire idea grosses me right out.

14. What was your favorite food as a child?
I don't necessarily think it was my favorite food, but I ate a lot of fresh produce from the garden as a kid. Carrots, peas, beans, etc. I have wonderful memories of eating peas from my grandma's garden. I can smell the sun warmed tomatoes just thinking about it.

15. Is there a food that you hated as a child but now like?
I really didn't like shrimp as a kid. I think it was eventually a breaded shrimp that won me over.

16. Is there a food that you liked as a child but now hate?
Don't think so.

17. Favorite fruit and vegetable:
I pretty much love all fruits and veggies, but here are some highlights
Fruit: Strawberries, mango, kiwi, raspberries
Veg: Broccoli, zucchini, Brussel sprouts, mushrooms

18. Favorite junk food:
Usually sweet stuff. Chocolate, candy, chewy caramels/toffees, hard candy, etc. You name it, I probably like it.

19. Favorite between meal snack:
I try to eat good stuff like a handful of almonds or a piece of fruit or something. If there's something sweet in the house, however, I generally go for that. That's why I try to avoid having nasties...I mean tasties.... in the house.

20. Do you have any weird food habits?
Don't think so. I don't like dunking cookies in milk. I like to eat my cereal fast so it doesn't get soggy. Are those weird?

21. You’re on a diet. What food(s) do you fill up on?
Fruit and veggies

22. You’re off your diet. Now what would you like?
Fruit and veggies... maybe some bad nibbly stuff.

23. How spicy do you order Indian/Thai?
Medium

24. Can I get you a drink?
Sure, water with no ice please.

25. Red wine or white?
Red please. They make white wine? Why ever for?

26. Favorite dessert?
Something with chocolate, whipped cream, sugar or butter... or all of the above.
